Elmore Leonard (1925–2013) was an American novelist and screenwriter best known for his gritty, economical crime fiction and novels set in the American West. He began his career writing Westerns in the 1950s before becoming celebrated for novels such as Get Shorty, Out of Sight, Rum Punch and Freaky Deaky. Leonard's distinctive dialogue, lean prose, and morally ambiguous characters influenced generations of crime writers and led to numerous film and television adaptations of his work.
