Vernor Vinge

Vernor Steffen Vinge (1944–2024) was an American mathematician, computer scientist and award-winning science fiction author. He taught mathematics and computer science at San Diego State University before retiring to write full-time. Vinge popularized the concept of the technological "singularity" and is known for influential works such as True Names, A Fire Upon the Deep, A Deepness in the Sky and Rainbows End. His writing often explores advanced computing, artificial intelligence, and large-scale speculative ideas across hard science fiction and space-opera settings.
