Nega Mezlekia

Nega Mezlekia (born 1958) is an Ethiopian-born writer and engineer who has lived in Canada since the 1980s. He is best known for his memoir Notes from the Hyena's Belly, which won the Governor General's Award for English-language non-fiction in 2000. Mezlekia's work draws on his upbringing in Jijiga, Ethiopia, and explores social, political and cultural change in Ethiopia across the late 20th century. He has also published novels including The God Who Begat a Jackal and The Unfortunate Marriage of Azeb Yitades.
