Edith Nesbit (15 August 1858 – 4 May 1924) was an English author and poet best known for her influential children’s books, which combine everyday settings with elements of fantasy. She published more than 60 works for young readers, including The Railway Children, Five Children and It, The Phoenix and the Carpet and The Story of the Amulet. Nesbit was also active politically as a founder of the Fellowship of the New Life and an early member of the Fabian movement.
