Lynne Reid Banks (31 July 1929 – 4 April 2024) was a British author of fiction for adults and children, best known for the bestselling children’s novel The Indian in the Cupboard and her debut adult novel The L-Shaped Room. She began her career as an actress and one of the first female news reporters on British television (ITN), later teaching on a kibbutz in Israel before returning to the UK. Over a long career she published numerous novels for adults and children, won the J. M. Barrie award for outstanding contribution to children's arts (2013), and saw several works adapted for film.
