Samuel Richardson (1689–1761) was an English novelist and printer, best known for pioneering the epistolary novel form. He gained fame with Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded (1740) and followed with major works including Clarissa (1748) and The History of Sir Charles Grandison (1753). His detailed psychological portraits and focus on moral dilemmas had significant influence on the development of the English novel.
