Nelle Harper Lee (April 28, 1926 – February 19, 2016) was an American novelist best known for To Kill a Mockingbird (1960), a landmark work addressing racial injustice in the American South. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961 and became a widely taught classic. Lee published a second novel, Go Set a Watchman, in 2015. She was born and raised in Monroeville, Alabama, and attended the University of Alabama before moving to New York to pursue writing.
